#57: A meditation to go from overwhelm to focus

or listen our podcast on:

If you are interested in getting focussed instead of overwhelmed by meditating, I’d highly recommend you to listen to the podcast instead of reading it, as you can relax more and close your eyes. However, I’ll still write this little summary for those who want to do it on their own time without needing the podcast.

Being overwhelmed isn’t a nice feeling. You feel stressed and uncomfortable and want to get out of that feeling. But your body gives you this feeling for a reason; it can help you get a better insight as to why you are feeling this way and what you can do to learn from it and even become more focused! I will do my best to help you with that. That’s why I’d like you to do the following.

Turn off the notifications on your phone. Don’t put it on vibrate, but on complete silent mode.
Now I’d like you to close your eyes and put yourself in a comfortable position.
You can lie or you can sit down, as long as you’re comfortable.
Now take three deep breaths, in by the nose and out by the mouth.
Now I want you to imagine a situation in the past where you felt overwhelmed.
Don’t resist these thoughts or feelings. The uncomfortable feeling you get from that situation can be compared to walking into quicksand.
You can choose to resist it, but that will only make you sink faster. Rather, what you should do, is accept the situation you are in, take a step back and focus on your next step. This feeling of overwhelm is a reaction from your body that has served you in the past. It warns you about undesirable situations. Once you understand that you can choose to accept it.
You can choose to accept that the feeling has served you in the past, but that you have grown a lot since then. You don’t need to give in to that anxiety anymore. You know you can handle the situation if you put your mind to it.

That is the moment where you can decide to focus. That’s when you see the bigger goals that actually matter to you and you can take steps to reach these goals. This experience of overwhelm has taught you to break habits from the past that don’t serve you anymore.

The next time you feel overwhelmed and stuck, remind yourself why you feel that way, accept that your body is giving you a message, take a step back and think about what you can do to reach your end goal! I hope you have a great day.
